Fireflies (or Summer Snowglobe)

Postby TotallyAwesome » June 13th, 2012, 8:30 pm

So, I have been in a lack of inspiration lately, for reasons I don't really want to discuss. BUT. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The other night, I was headed to pick up my daughter at my mother-in-law's house. She lives in the middle of nowhere, and I turned the corner into farmland, and there was this HUGE field of lightning bugs, hovering about two feet above the tall grass near the trees. I was so mesmerized and instantly got this feel-good thing. Decided to write.

The result is a starter RP post that I couldn't fit in anywhere else, and didn't think I could trust anywhere but here.

------

There was no moon as she walked in the night, though there was plenty of ambient light from the surrounding area - the little town with the little factory. She walked, not on a path, but through a field, just far enough away from the road that the cars couldn't really be heard. The night was clear, the temperature just right, though it was a little damp for her taste.

She hooked her thumbs in her jeans pockets, mostly looking down at the knee-high grass she stepped through. The ground wasn't muddy in the slightest, but tomorrow, her chucks would be covered in dirt. Not that it mattered. They were already falling apart, and the tread was so low that she could feel every tiny little rock that she stepped on.

A slight breeze drifted through the night air, rippling her button down shirt as it passed. It smelled of summer: grass and campfires mixed with green crops and wildflowers. A smile crossed her face.

As she cleared the top of the slight incline she'd been taking, a breathtaking view was given to her. In the twilight below, thousands and thousands of fireflies were waking up from their day's sleep, and hovering just slightly above the tall grass in which they'd hidden themselves from the sun. It was as though the air was glittering, and as she descended into the lower part of the field, she couldn't help but believe she was the center of a display inside of a snowglobe. Only, instead of frosty winter themes, it was a sweet summer night.

It was here that she stopped, knowing any second, the thing she wanted most would appear to her, from the other side of the field.
